Please Take A Seat…..

“….Our Ability to recognize certain objects improves due to cultural conditioning and our memory, In fact, you are so conditioned to recognize objects that you often don’t need to see an object in its entirety to understand what it is. If it’s familiar to you, your brain will fill in the rest….” – Blue Fier

Such a great quote from a true master of composition…. this one statement alone changed my way of looking at anything and everything…….

Avalon Sunrise

My website is finally completed! It has taken a while but I finally got there……

So new to this site are:

  • My Portfolio containing all of my previous work.
  • “Buy” link to purchase some of my selected work through RedBubble.
  • Subscribe by email to get live updates to my website.
  • An easy to use contact page to contact me directly!

So to celebrate, I woke up at 4:30am to head 1 hour north to Avalon (Thanks Sean!!). It’s a great place if anyone dares to scale a 20 meter cliff with camera gear!!

Thanks to all who have been visiting my site. Your ongoing support keeps me out and about taking more pictures!:)

Update: I was so excited about announcing the completion of my new site, I forgot to write a little info about the actual photo and the processing involved!!!

This is one photo which I’ve spent alot of time on getting each and every element the way I wanted.

Firstly this is composite of 2 exposures, one for below and one for above the horizon.

After merging the two photos together, It’s a matter of bringing each element out using a series of Adjustment Layers in Photoshop (16 layers to be exact, consisting of Levels, Curves, Contrast and Saturation).

The biggest challenge I had was to bring a bit of balance to the light in the photo. Because the rising sun was so strong, it  over powered the foreground just a tad. So to bring balance, I had to adjust the brightness of the rock on the bottom right corner.

Besides that, it’s just a few adjustments here and there, and Unsharp Mask to finish everything off!

Hope I didn’t confuse anyone!….:)

A present from the Devil!!…A Self Portrait

Yep!! took a Self Portrait tonight, but I didn’t want to show my ugly face so this is what I came up with.

(5D2, 85mm, 1/200, f13, iso200) Bigger Version

The Setup:

SelfPortrait-setup

-1x Snooted 580EXII Camera Left at 45degress point straight at prop camera and just clipping the red hat.
-1x Light Blue Gel 550ex behind subject pointed straight at curtains.
-1x Large white reflector camera left to highlight side of face.
-Triggered by ST-E2 (Gadget Infinities, said bye bye:()

Post Processing:

PS CS3: Levels, Curves and Saturation.

Final Thoughts:

It’s Bloody annoying take self portraits!!! Setup, put the timer on, wait 10secs, do all over again until it’s right. But in the end, I achieved the look I was after. Moody background, red hat to match the red L-series ring, and NOT SHOWING MY FACE….LOL:D

Tassy Adventure….

Escaping the “Big Smoke”. Well that’s exactly what I did last week, and so off I went with a few friends on a Tasmania road trip to get out of the hustle of Sydney. And of course, my trusty camera was with me all the way, and getting back to what I like most, Landscape photography….

This first shot is a typical postcard shot of Cradle Mountain, one of the most famous spots in Tasmania. Conditions were tricky with the sun peeking through the clouds, casting strong shadows throughout the landscape. Decided to tone this one down a little for an aged effect.

(5D2, 35mm, F8, 1/200, iso400) Bigger Version

I was a bit lucky with this next one as conditions were changing every minute. The sun through the clouds created a spot light effect on and around this little wooden hut, giving a strong contrast to the moody Cradle Mountain at the back. Love the low hanging clouds on this one….:)

(5D2, 33mm, F13, 1/100, iso200) Bigger Version

This shot was taken at the King Billy track which goes around the lodge where we stayed. The trees were a lovely green color.

(5D2, 22mm, F10, 1/20, iso400) Bigger Version

Well, that was it for Cradle Mountain, this next spot is a blow hole, located on the east coast of Tasmania in a town called Bicheno. This shot was pretty frustrating for me, because the blow hole decided to play tricks on me. Every time I faced away from it, it decided to shoot water 10 feet in the air, and never anything spectacular when I was facing it:(

(5D2, 17mm, F22, 1/5, iso50) Bigger Version

Also on the east coast is a coastal area called Bay of Fires, such a cool name!!….So making the most of it. I captured these, same place but processed very differently……

(5D2, 17mm, F22, 0.3sec, iso50) Bigger Version

(5D2, 26mm, F22, 0.3 sec, iso50) Bigger Version

This was a real whirlwind tour of Tassy, covering the east coast in just 4 days. But all in all, it was very fun going on a road trip with a bunch of great friends!!
